This undated photo was probably taken on July 4, 1886 shortly after the Hotel Ottawa first opened. From the third floor observation deck one could see the beach on Lake Michigan, the channel and lighthouse, sailboats and steamers plying the waters of Black Lake and even the spires of churches in Holland seven miles to the east. Note the windmill north of the hotel (at the far right) which supplied  water for the hotel.
